Reducing Violence Against Women

Senior representatives of Police Scotland have recently signed up to White Ribbon - a global campaign that aims to eradicate male violence against women.

White Ribbon Day took place on 25th November, and also marked the start of 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence.

“Violence against women takes many forms, whether it’s sexual crime, domestic abuse, human trafficking, female genital mutilation or another form of abuse,” commented Deputy Chief Constable Iain Livingstone. “The vast majority of these offences take place in private or in virtual space rather than public spaces. While most men do not perpetrate violence against women, the overwhelming majority of offenders are men.”

“This has to stop,” he added.

The latest figures on domestic abuse in Scotland show that in 2016-17 there were 58,810 incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police, which is an increase of 1% from 2015-16.

The figures also show that:

  • 47% of incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police in Scotland resulted in at least one crime or offence being committed. The proportion in 2015-16 was 51% (29,906).
  • Incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police in Scotland with a female victim and a male accused represented 79% of all incidents of domestic abuse in 2016-17 where gender information was recorded. Since 2007-08 this percentage share has fallen from 85%.
  • Incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police are more common at weekends, with 36% of all incidents in 2016-17 occurring on a Saturday or Sunday.
  • In 2016-17, 88% of all incidents of domestic abuse occurred in a home or dwelling.
